Teacher Training at the ITEM Project 'ICT Tools for Education'

In the framework of ITEM project from December 12 to 13 representatives of ITEM partner universities gathered in Riga, hotel “Monika” to participate in the teacher training “ICT tools for education” and to acquire creative approaches in using of the information and communication technology tools, realizing the international joint study programme in  International Tourism Events Management. The new study programme will be jointly delivered by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and Klaipeda University and supported by consortium partners: Estonian School of Hotel and Tourism Management EHTE, Estonia, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Latvia and the International Centre of Studies on the Tourist Economy, Italy.

The aim of the training was to provide the common background of the programme, to introduce the quality standards and help to team up; as well as to enhance the teacher competences in using different ICT-tools for topics related to education, to help teachers working in a creative way with ICT as a way to support, enrich and ameliorate the courses in the program as to achieve the educational goals in a more effective and up-to-date way.

Training opened by one of the emerging programme directors from Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Dr.geogr Andris Klepers, highlighting the programme idea, strategy as well as setting principles. In turn, the programme director of the Klaipeda University Prof. Ausrine Armaitiene focused on the practical issues – preparing of the descriptions of study courses and modules.

Further interactive training was led by Corne Dijkmans and Jeroen Vinkesteijn from Netherlands, commencing with the creativity “unlocking” of the training participants – solving problem situations in a creative way and modelling of the mind maps in relation to the subject taught in the study programme. For the subsequent stages of the training, following application possibilities of the ICT tools were highlighted: creating and editing documents online (google.doc and other); video & video platforms (YouTube); micro-blogging in education (Twitter, Facebook). Each of these ICT tools had three phases in these training – homework before training (preparatory part), interactive learning during training (“on-the-spot” part) and tasks after training (implementation part), to be continued up to the start of the course at the new study programme.

The training programme was complemented by Susan Craig’s presentation on best practices in using Moodle within Financial Management curriculum at the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

The new master’s programme is developed in the framework of Erasmus Multilateral project “Joint Masters in International Tourism and Events Management” (ITEM - 527698-LLP-1-2012-1-LV-ERASMUS-EMCR).
