KLAIPĖDA UNIVERSITY

Klaipėda University (KU / in Lithuanian: Klaipėdos universitetas) was founded in 1990 in Klaipeda. Klaipeda has 178 000 inhabitants and is considered the centre of Western Lithuania.

KU pays attention to trends in scientific researches, artistic activity and academic activities, which are not cultivated by other Lithuanian universities and it develops as an autonomous and modern scientific and study centre located at a neo-gothic campus - monument of architecture.

KU is a centre of Lithuania as a marine country and a centre of the Baltic Sea region research, arts and studies, which prepares highly qualified specialists, fosters humanist values and pays attention to research in marine science and marine studies, history, culture and languages, education, health and social welfare, economy, politics, communications and arts of the Baltic Sea region, sustainable development of Western Lithuania and the Klaipėda City and development of an integrated science, studies and business centre.

KU aims to be the Western Lithuania university, which is both multi- and interdisciplinary as well as integrated into international academic networks, a leader of the national and Baltic Sea region research and studies, an upholder of cultural heritage, a life-long learning centre.

Today KU is home for over 6,500 students, staff of 1,300 (including 600 professors, associate professors and lecturers) at for 7 faculties (Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Humanities, Marine Engineering, Arts, Pedagogy, Social sciences, Health sciences), 2 study institutes and 3 scientific research institutes.

KU offers 67 undergraduate programmes, 51 postgraduate programmes, 2  integrated (consecutive) programme, 1 non-degree study programme and 10 doctoral programmes.

Unity of science and studies, their qualitative integration into national and European scientific space is the major principle of its activity as KU is a member of academic network, involving association of European universities and Baltic region universities.

Underlying scientific trend in KU is cohesive development of the Baltic region and national identity under the conditions of globalization as KU enjoys scientific and academic partnership with 28 European and North American universities and is involved in many international foundations, organizations, networks, programmes and projects.
